US reviews national security implications of China' s use of RISC-V Chip technology

The US is examining China's role in RISC-V chip tech due to security concerns. Due to major Chinese tech companies, including Alibaba Group, using RISC-V, 18 US lawmakers are urging the Biden administration to prevent China from dominating the RISC-V technology sector.

The Commerce Department is assessing risks and taking cautious steps to avoid hindering US companies in global RISC-V collaborations.

China's military and state entities heavily invest in RISC-V, aiming to contest the dominance of Western architectures such as x86 and Arm.

While RISC-V has yet to surpass the dominance of x86 and Arm architectures, its advantages in cost-effectiveness, customizability, and energy efficiency have made it an attractive prospect for chipmakers and OEMs. The increasing adoption of RISC-V in China raises US concerns on tech leadership and security.

The review's results will impact US-China tech rivalry and chip tech transfer policies.
