SuperSiC Breaks Ground on New SiC Wafer Plant in Malaysia to Boost Advanced Chipmaking Capabilities

On July 4, SuperSiC (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of China's Zhejiang Jinggong Science & Technology Co., Ltd. (JSG), held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new manufacturing facility in the Bertam Technology Park, Penang, Malaysia. The project aims to fill a key gap in Malaysia's semiconductor ecosystem by establishing advanced wafer manufacturing capabilities.

Covering a site area of 40,000 square meters, the facility marks a major step in JSG's global expansion strategy. Construction is set to begin within a year.

Once Phase 1 is completed, the plant will have an annual production capacity of 240,000 8-inch silicon carbide (SiC) wafers. SiC wafers are critical for high-performance electronic applications such as electric vehicle chargers and power systems in telecom base stations.

Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), stated in a press release that the project will support several national strategic initiatives, including the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, the Chemical Industry Roadmap 2030, and the National Semiconductor Strategy 2030.

“This project will serve as a catalyst to attract further investment into this crucial sector and reinforce Malaysia's position as a hub for advanced manufacturing in Asia,” he said. “With SuperSiC's commitment, we are laying the foundation for Malaysia's future in high-tech industries.”

Dr. Cao Jianwei, Chairman of JSG, said the Penang plant represents a pivotal step in the company's international strategy.

He added that the project not only enables SuperSiC to establish localized production capacity in Southeast Asia but also opens the door for deeper integration with Malaysia's semiconductor ecosystem.

“This will help strengthen global supply chain resilience and reflects our commitment to being close to customers and responding quickly,” Dr. Cao said.

Founded in 2006 and listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, JSG is a global leader in solar equipment and large-diameter wafer equipment (8–12 inch), and holds advanced technology in large-size sapphire crystal growth, according to the company's website.
