Samsung Supplier Pumps $100M Into Austin to Support Next-Gen Chip Production

Deposition Technology Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of Korean semiconductor materials firm WONIK QnC, is investing $100 million to expand its manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. The move is aimed at supporting demand from Samsung Electronics, which is preparing to bring its $17 billion foundry in Taylor online next year.

Samsung's new fab is expected to produce cutting-edge chips for 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-performance computing (HPC) applications. The expansion by Deposition Technology is viewed as a proactive response to meet these advanced manufacturing needs.

WONIK QnC, known for its materials and cleaning services for semiconductor and display production, has been expanding its footprint in North America. In 2022, it established its U.S. subsidiary, WONIK QnC America, and the following year acquired 100% of Deposition Technology to secure a base for local operations. The company has also been selected as a key cleaning and coating partner for Samsung's Taylor fab.

Samsung, meanwhile, has signed a preliminary agreement with the U.S. government to invest $45 billion in its American semiconductor operations through 2030. The plan includes two new foundries (2nm and 4nm), R&D centers, and advanced packaging facilities. Although Samsung later scaled back some packaging plans due to market conditions, demand from major U.S. customers such as NVIDIA and AMD continues to drive long-term investment in advanced process nodes.

As Korean suppliers ramp up their U.S. presence, the semiconductor ecosystem in Texas is poised for significant growth in the years ahead.
