Continental Launches In-House Semiconductor Unit Ahead of Aumovio Spin-Off, Taps GlobalFoundries as Foundry Partner

On June 23, 2025 (local time in Germany), Continental's Automotive Group Sector announced the creation of a new internal organization, Advanced Electronics & Semiconductor Solutions (AESS), as part of its transition toward becoming an independent company under the name Aumovio. The newly formed unit will focus on designing and verifying automotive-specific semiconductors, with GlobalFoundries (GF) selected as its exclusive manufacturing partner.

As demand for semiconductors in software-defined vehicles continues to surge, the global automotive chip market is expected to reach €110 billion by 2032. In response, Continental is strengthening its technological independence by becoming a fabless semiconductor developer, aiming to secure a more resilient supply chain and reduce exposure to geopolitical risks.

“To ensure the future success of our Automotive group sector, we've decided to develop semiconductors internally,” said Philipp von Hirschheydt, Executive Board member at Continental and CEO of the future Aumovio. “This initiative strengthens our self-reliance and positions us more competitively in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.”

AESS will handle front-end chip design and validation, while GF will fabricate the chips using its globally distributed production footprint. GF's automotive-grade technologies are already powering next-generation vehicles and industrial applications. GF President and COO Niels Anderskouv noted, “Our silicon-proven portfolio and global capacity will help Continental accelerate innovation in software-defined and autonomous vehicles.”

The formation of AESS is part of Continental's broader operational and technological transformation strategy. According to Nino Romano, CTO of Continental Automotive, the move reflects a critical investment in essential technologies and will enable the company to deliver advanced, integrated automotive solutions more efficiently.

Beyond improving product quality and time-to-market, Continental expects the initiative to create long-term value through cost efficiencies and improved cash flow. Operating within Continental's broader Operations and Technology framework, AESS is set to play a central role in strengthening the company's market position and future growth in the semiconductor-driven automotive industry.
