As geopolitical tensions and tariff threats mount, Taiwanese PCB and semiconductor equipment supplier C SUN (TWSE: 2467) has pledged to follow TSMC to the United States, marking what the company calls a true beginning of internationalization.
"With our clients expanding overseas, it's inevitable that we go with them—be it to the U.S., Germany, or Japan," said C SUN General Manager Liang You-Wen during the VLSI TSA Symposium. "For us, this marks Taiwan's first step toward genuine globalization."
The move reflects growing concern in Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain over the possible reintroduction of high U.S. tariffs should Donald Trump return to office. Industry players fear a potential second round of semiconductor tariffs as early as May 7. Liu Chun-Tiao, Chairman of component maker Cyntec, revealed that several clients have already asked for production to shift to Southeast Asia in response.
But for smaller firms like C SUN, establishing production lines in the U.S. comes with heavy costs. Analysts warn that operating expenses in the U.S. can be 30–50% higher than in Taiwan, making it difficult for companies without the scale of giants like ASE or KYEC to remain competitive. Many may end up setting up only service offices rather than full production facilities.
"The cost gap could widen further with a depreciating U.S. dollar and ongoing inflation," said Chai Huan-Hsin, Vice President of the Yunbao Institute of Industrial Economics. "Even with TSMC's support, the burden may fall squarely on suppliers, especially if end customers like NVIDIA or AMD reject higher prices."
Despite the challenges, C SUN continues to strengthen its role in advanced packaging. On April 22, C SUN Chairman Liang Mao-Sheng received the 2025 ERSO Award—one of Taiwan's most prestigious industry honors—for his contributions to the electronics and semiconductor sectors.
A chemical engineering graduate of National Taiwan University, Liang has led C SUN to become a listed company and a key player in semiconductor, PCB, and TFT-LCD equipment. Under his leadership, the company formed the G2C+ Alliance with Chunghao Tech (5443) and Chunghwa Precision Test (6640), creating a comprehensive ecosystem for advanced packaging.
The alliance has been recognized by TSMC for its excellence, receiving the "Outstanding Mass Production Support" award in 2023 and the "Outstanding Improvement" award in 2024, underscoring C SUN's reliability and technical strength.
Liang is also known for promoting industry-academia collaboration, ESG initiatives, and international partnerships. With a leadership philosophy focused on shared prosperity, he continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Taiwan's electronics equipment industry on the global stage.
