A global leader in high-end IC substrates and printed circuit boards, AT&S, has announced its entry into the defense sector to address growing demand for security-critical technologies. The company said the move reflects its commitment to social responsibility and long-term strategic stability amid global geopolitical uncertainty. Production for defense-related applications will be based at its Leoben site in Austria.
"Security is the foundation of freedom," said Michael Mertin, President & CEO of AT&S. "We have already been approached by potential customers and will now actively engage with new partners in the defense sector."
The expansion marks a strategic step for AT&S toward diversifying beyond cyclical markets while strengthening its Austrian operations. Preparations are underway in Leoben to align facilities with defense industry standards, including possible structural and technical upgrades. AT&S expects annual revenue from the segment to reach the mid-double-digit million-euro range in the medium term.
Responsible Expansion Aligned with ESG Principles
AT&S emphasized that all defense-related activities will fully comply with Austrian and EU regulations. The company underscored that security technologies, when developed responsibly, play an essential role in safeguarding democratic values and protecting citizens.
With long-standing expertise in advanced interconnect technologies used across civilian and security-related fields, AT&S plans to focus on solutions that support defense, prevention, and critical infrastructure protection. "Through our technologies, we aim to contribute to stability and security while positioning AT&S for the future," Mertin added.
