ASML Launches Massive Expansion with Campus the Size of 50 Football Fields to Meet Soaring Chip Equipment Demand

ASML, the Dutch semiconductor equipment giant, is accelerating its ambitious expansion plans with a new industrial campus near Eindhoven set to accommodate employees by 2028—two years ahead of its original 2030 timeline.

According to reports from Dutch media outlets Tweakers.net and ED, the announcement was made during a presentation of an initial urban development plan, jointly conducted with Eindhoven city officials. The new facility will be part of the Brainport Industries Campus and will eventually host a significant portion of ASML's projected 20,000 new employees.

The expansion is striking in scale. The campus will add at least 357,000 square meters—roughly the size of 50 football fields—and will be located between Eindhoven Airport and the A2 motorway, with the Ekkersrijt river running through the site. Described as “un-Dutchly large,” the project underscores the company's urgent need to scale production of its advanced equipment.

ASML is the sole supplier of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are critical for the most advanced semiconductor nodes. With demand from chipmakers like TSMC, Intel, and Samsung continuing to surge, ASML's current output capacity has been stretched to its limits. This expansion aims to alleviate the supply bottleneck and better serve the rapidly growing AI and high-performance computing sectors.

The campus design includes two parking garages and space for 4,200 bicycles. While a dedicated highway exit will not be built, local roads will be redesigned, and a new bus lane will be added to handle commuter traffic.

The Dutch government has committed €1.7 billion (approximately $1.8 billion) to support the project, reflecting its strategic importance to both the region and the national economy. However, challenges remain. The country's electricity grid is already under strain, and land acquisition is not fully resolved—Philips owns 80% of the planned site, but the remaining 20% requires additional negotiations and legal approvals.

Moreover, now that the plans are public, environmental groups and nearby municipalities have the right to submit feedback, which could impact the project timeline.

Despite these hurdles, the accelerated timeline signals ASML's determination to expand production capacity and meet the global semiconductor industry's growing appetite for EUV tools—vital for advancing next-generation chips.
