On October 6, 2025, Amkor Technology, a global leader in outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) services, officially broke ground on a new, state-of-the-art packaging and test campus in Peoria, Arizona. The project, marking a significant expansion in the U.S. semiconductor industry, represents an investment of $7 billion across two phases, with over 750,000 square feet of cleanroom space planned upon completion.
The first phase of the facility is slated for completion in mid-2027, with production set to begin in early 2028. The campus will serve key customers such as Apple and Nvidia, providing advanced packaging for chips, including those fabricated by TSMC at its nearby Arizona fabs. The new campus will address the growing need for high-density integration and advanced semiconductor packaging, particularly for AI accelerators, which require complex interconnects and integration.
Amkor's investment comes on the heels of significant support from the U.S. Commerce Department, which awarded the company up to $400 million in CHIPS Act funding. Arizona's leaders have hailed the project as a critical step in bolstering U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and supply chain resilience, creating up to 3,000 high-quality jobs.
The Peoria campus will be strategically located within Arizona's expanding high-tech corridor, near major players like TSMC and Intel. The facility will incorporate advanced smart factory technologies and scalable production lines, supporting sectors such as AI, high-performance computing, mobile communications, and automotive applications.
"Amkor's expansion in Arizona represents a transformative investment in the future of semiconductor manufacturing in the United States," said Giel Rutten, President and CEO of Amkor. "This project underscores our commitment to advancing the semiconductor ecosystem and our deepening roots in Arizona."
U.S. government officials, including Senator Mark Kelly and Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, celebrated the groundbreaking, emphasizing the importance of the project in strengthening the country's semiconductor supply chain and creating new job opportunities.
Amkor's new facility will play a vital role in U.S. efforts to create a more resilient, domestic semiconductor industry and will complement existing wafer fabrication efforts by companies like TSMC and Intel. With the Arizona campus, Amkor will be at the forefront of meeting the advanced packaging needs of the rapidly growing AI and semiconductor markets.
"This is a landmark moment for Peoria and Arizona's high-tech future," said Mayor Jason Beck. "This investment will strengthen our economy, create thousands of jobs, and solidify Arizona's position as a global hub for semiconductor innovation."
As the semiconductor industry faces increasing demand for advanced packaging solutions, Amkor's Arizona campus is poised to play a key role in the U.S. chip manufacturing renaissance, providing a critical link between wafer production and finished AI systems.
