Two major European PCB manufacturers have announced new investments in advanced automatic optical inspection (AOI) equipment to strengthen high-precision PCB production capability.
Merlin PCB Group Installs Two New CIMS Galaxy 25 AOI Machines
On November 11, the UK-based Merlin PCB Group reported on LinkedIn that it has invested in two state-of-the-art CIMS Galaxy 25-micron AOI systems. One machine has been installed at the highly specialized Merlin Flex facility in Hartlepool, and the other at the advanced manufacturing site Merlin Circuit Technology in Hawarden.
According to the company, the latest CIMS systems significantly expand inline inspection capacity across both sites. The equipment supports inspection of a wide range of PCB materials and structures—from ultra-thin flexible substrates and thick copper sculptured flex to high-speed rigid HDI laminates.
Merlin noted that the systems will help meet the stringent specifications required by its defense and aerospace customers, while also enabling additional in-process checks such as laser-drill verification, enhancing overall process control. The company also thanked the professional Adeon installation team for its technical support during commissioning.

Lab Circuits Adds Second CIMS Galaxy 25 AOI System
Meanwhile, Spanish high-tech PCB manufacturer Lab Circuits announced the acquisition of its second CIMS Galaxy 25 AOI System, reinforcing its strategy to expand high-precision inspection capabilities.
The new system is designed to support volume production of HDI and multilayer PCBs, offering 25-micrometer resolution for fine-line inspection. Powered by Microlight™ Gen II optical technology, the system delivers optimal illumination that enhances defect detection even on challenging or low-contrast materials.

Lab Circuits highlighted additional key features:
2D dimensional measurement
Laser hole inspection
Smooth, low-noise motion via linear motors
Compact and rigid mechanical platform
High-performance image-processing firmware
Fast and intuitive job setup
Compatibility with AMHS automation and robotics
The equipment also incorporates the Spark™ 3.0 detection engine, which combines enhanced image capture with customizable algorithms to maximize defect discovery while minimizing false positives.
Xavier Angel, Technical Director of Lab Circuits, said the investment significantly improves early defect detection, reducing review times and strengthening product reliability. The company stated that the new system positions Lab Circuits firmly at the forefront of high-tech PCB manufacturing in Europe.
